Return of the Sith? Hayden Christensen Rumored For “Star Wars: Episode VIII”

The ghost of “Star Wars” prequels past may be haunting the franchise again.

Hayden Christensen, who played Darth Vader-to-be Anakin Skywalker in Episode II (“Attack of the Clones”) and Episode III (“Revenge of the Sith”), has been rumored to suit up as Darth Vader for “Star Wars: Episode VIII.”

The Hollywood Reporter said a team from the United Kingdom has been brought in to train the 34-year-old actor, and that a functional Darth Vader helmet and chest piece has been built.

“Star Wars: Episode VIII” began filming in January and will be directed by Rian Johnson.  The latest film in the series, “The Force Awakens,” became the fastest film in history to top the $1 billion box-office mark.

Fan response to the return of Christensen has been mixed – understandably so, because his performance as Anakin and Darth Vader and the two films he starred in are often regarded as low points of the series.

There has been no word from anyone in Christensen’s camp to confirm or deny the rumor.  “Star Wars: Episode VIII” will arrive in theaters December 15, 2017, the 40th anniversary of the saga.
